Resource Recycler: An In-Depth Analysis
TJ Edmund, March 2026
When healthcare systems fall short, communities step up.
At From We Can’t to We Can, we work with families navigating a healthcare system that is often slow, inaccessible, and overwhelming – especially when support is needed most. Long waitlists. Rising costs. Insurance denials. Essential medical equipment treated as optional instead of necessary.
Resource Recycler exists because access should never depend on timing, coverage status, or individual circumstances. It is our community-powered medical equipment donation and redistribution program, designed to restore dignity, mobility, and independence – without delay.
The Access Gap
Durable medical equipment – wheelchairs, standers, gait trainers, bath chairs, and communication tools – can change lives. Yet for many individuals and families, accessing these items is one of the hardest parts of care.
Insurance approvals can take months or be denied altogether. Children outgrow equipment quickly. Adults may experience sudden medical changes that require immediate solutions. At the same time, gently used equipment sits unused in homes, garages, and storage units.
The need exists. The resources exist. The system does not connect them.
Quick Stats: Barriers to Equipment Access
- “52%: Equipment or supplies not covered by health plan”
- “47%: Difficulty securing health plan authorization”
- “47%: Unable to afford cost sharing”
- “~33%: Difficulty obtaining prescriptions from a provider”
- “>25%: Equipment unavailable due to supply chain shortages”
- “>20%: Lack of health insurance”

Across New Jersey and the Mid-Atlantic region, these gaps leave families waiting – sometimes at the cost of comfort, safety, and independence. Resource Recycler bridges that gap with timely, community-driven solutions.
A Community-Powered Solution
Through donations from families, caregivers, and community partners, our nonprofit:
- Collects gently used medical equipment
- Ensures items are safe, functional, and ready for reuse
- Redistributes them directly to individuals and families in need
All equipment is provided at no cost. This reduces financial strain, shortens wait times, and removes barriers during moments when families cannot afford to wait.
The need exists. The resources exist. The system does not connect them.
Why Space Matters
Currently, Resource Recycler operates out of a single 10 x 15 storage unit in Southern New Jersey. While every inch is carefully organized, growing demand limits how much we can accept, store, and distribute.
A permanent physical location would allow us to:
- Store more equipment safely and efficiently
- Clean and refurbish items on-site
- Provide personalized fittings and timely pickups
- Coordinate volunteer repair and support teams
- Welcome families into a dignified, accessible space
Expanding our footprint means expanding access – and responding faster when needs arise.
How It Works
- Donate: Gently used mobility aids, adaptive devices, and safety supports are donated by families, caregivers, and community partners.
- Review: Each item is evaluated for cleanliness, functionality, and safe reuse.
- Match: Requests are prioritized and matched based on urgency, fit, and availability.
- Redistribute: Equipment is placed quickly into new homes – helping families bypass long wait times and insurance hurdles.
- Repeat: As needs change, equipment can be returned, re-donated, or passed along – keeping resources circulating within the community.
Who We Serve
Resource Recycler supports individuals, families, and caregivers located within the Mid-Atlantic region, especially New Jersey. Requests are considered regardless of insurance status.
Equipment is distributed based on availability and geographic capacity. All donated items are gently used and provided as-is. We cannot guarantee medical outcomes and encourage recipients to consult their healthcare providers to ensure appropriate fit and use.
“They are an amazing non-profit who help our disabled youth receive adaptive equipment that they may not be able to receive on their own through insurance issues, lack of funds, etc. Their mission makes my heart full. Their staff was truly kind and welcoming to my autistic daughter and offered us any support that they could. They are just simply amazing.” – The Johnson Family
Why Resource Recycler Matters – Right Now
While national discussions focus on healthcare policy and reform, families need solutions today. Resource Recycler:
- Reduces wait times for essential equipment
- Supports uninsured and underinsured individuals
- Promotes sustainability by reducing medical waste
- Strengths local networks rooted in compassion and mutual care
In a system where accessibility is often delayed or denied, Resource Recycler delivers immediate relief – and lasting impact.
Keeping the Cycle Moving
Resource Recycler thrives because of community involvement. Every donated item, shared post, volunteer hour, and heartfelt conversation helps us ensure no one is left waiting, worrying, or going without. When traditional systems fall short, communities rise together. Resource Recycler turns compassion into action – one piece of equipment, one family helped, one connection at a time.
